For this renovation, to keep costs down we recycled the existing gravel and divided and replanted existing Pacific Coast Iris that the owner liked.
Since the owner was highly allergic to the existing Mulberry trees he wanted them removed and the trees provided protection to front windows from the western sun. We built an arbor with louvers to deflect sun from the windows providing immediate shade until the new trees reach the height needed to shade the front yard. As a bonus the structure added interest to the house with lights inside the louvers to light the walkway and create interest at night.
The front walkway was narrow with an awkward step up to a painted wood stoop with another step up to house so we eliminated the step, widened the walkway increasing the size of the front door entrance to make it inviting using brick to match the existing fireplace.
